Joel H.
Chancellor’s Club Scholarship Award Winner
Biography
Though Joel hasn't figured out which kind of engineering he will specialize in, he is interested by the rapidly expanding fields of renewable energy, petrochemicals, and programming/artificial intelligence.
Before coming to University of Calgary, Joel graduated from Bishop Carroll High School. His top three achievements in high school were: serving as Student Council President, launching a system for student feedback to be incorporated into course materials and debuting a series of surveys to gather feedback that helped advocate to admin on behalf of students on issues that they cared about; going on an exchange to France and got his DELF B2 French language certification; saving the school's debate club from ending by serving as Captain, organizing our meetings, and helping teach new team members. Beyond these achievements, Joel also volunteered weekly at Raise the Grade as a tutor to help junior high and high school students with their course work. Joel’s interests are hiking, travel, and playing pond hockey with buddies.
Joel chose the University of Calgary due to its location close to home, the great access to scholarships, and the things he has heard about it from his friends and his sisters.
Joel explains the impact of receipt of the Chancellor’s Club Scholarship: “The Chancellor's Club Scholarship will push me to be the best student I can be both academically and socially. The financial aid will open new doors and the scholarship will encourage me to be an active member of the U of C community.”
