Biography

Gian graduated from St. Joseph High School in Red Deer, AB. During his time there he received the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal for his volunteer work with CARE for Newcomers, helping settle immigrants and refugees to life in Canada. He also performed and mentored his peers in two school musical theatre productions as dance co-captain and as a lead actor. He was also valedictorian of his graduating class.

Gian chose UCalgary because of the program’s blended model. He finds it conducive to his workflow and he knew that he would thrive while being given more control of his learning. He also hopes to participate in the research opportunities that UCalgary offers.

Gian is in the Bachelor of Science – Engineering program. He chose this program because he finds interest in math and science, and he likes to apply his knowledge while designing something functional.

Gian hopes to work in a dynamic workplace with opportunities to travel internationally. His ideal role would be working in Europe as a project manager in the public or private sector, where he can apply his skills to the betterment of society.

For Gian, the award relieves the stress of the financial aspect of education. He can focus on advancing his studies and reaching his personal goals. He also gets to exemplify leadership and mentorship in both his classes and extracurricular pursuits.

Gian is interested in microbial fuel cells or any electrochemical cell that generates energy from redox reactions. Gian believes efficient energy production and storage will be an important aspect of a more sustainable future. Gian hopes to learn more about this field in a research setting.
