Lisa W

Biography

Lisa graduated from Brookswood Secondary School. While there, she got involved in her church and became a leader for youth programs and outreach initiatives like the depression recovery group. She also received an RCM 10 in classical piano, performing with senior band at festivals and earning gold. Additionally, she worked with a psychology lab to develop mental health resources for Ugandan youth.

Lisa chose UCalgary because of the many opportunities available to students to get involved, such as through research, clubs, or academics. She finds that UCalgary is the perfect size to create genuine connections with peers, TAs, and professors.

Lisa is enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program, majoring in Biomedical Sciences. She chose this program because of its focus on interdisciplinary health with an emphasis on developing research skills.

In the future, Lisa hopes to go into medicine, specifically psychiatry or neurology.

For Lisa, the Prestige Award allows her to focus on her academic endeavors while providing time and opportunities for her to advance her interests through both research and volunteering.

Lisa is particularly interested in researching the brain, especially how neuronal connections shape who we are, how we think, and who we become. She’s also interested in learning about the biological mechanisms behind mental disorders and how we can prevent and treat them in the long term.
