Biography
Riya graduated from John G. Diefenbaker High School in Calgary, AB. While there she received the English Language Arts Excellence, Service, and Leadership Award, which is given to outstanding students in the areas of academic merit, performance, and behaviour. She also held varying roles at Youth Leaders in Law, an organization that created opportunities for students to explore their interests in the humanities. Additionally, she continued to dance and perform with Soul Feet Dance Productions and became a Junior Instructor allowing her to share her passion for creative expression with students.
Riya chose to study at UCalgary for her undergraduate studies because of the university’s commitment to diversity and dedication to research.
Riya is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science – Engineering program. Throughout her education, many of her teachers fostered and amplified her passion for learning, especially in STEM, which is ultimately what led her to study engineering. She feels that engineering will allow her to apply her creative problem-solving skills while exploring the world of STEM.
Riya has a personal passion for helping people. In the future, she wants to utilize her university education to help less fortunate people.
For Riya, the Prestige Award will allow her to focus on her academics while balancing extracurricular activities and community involvement.
Riya is excited to contribute to the creation of sustainable solutions, especially through software engineering.
Outside of her studies, Riya is a Bollywood dancer and enjoys other activities involving health and fitness, such as gymnastics, yoga, running, and hiking. She also enjoys volunteering at the Mustard Seed, the Calgary Public library, and being a National Board Member for Youth Leaders in Law.
