Browsing Programs

Below, you will see sections for Spring/Summer Programs and Semester Programs, where you can explore programs offered around the world. Each program name is hyperlinked to a page where you can find detailed information about courses, study dates, budget, housing, and more!

You can apply to study abroad as long as you're in good academic standing and will have completed at least 10 university courses before going abroad (that means if you're a first-year student in September 2025 and take a full courseload, you can apply to go abroad as early as Spring/Summer 2026). However, pay attention to the eligibility & application details listed on each program page, as some programs have different requirements.

Spring/Summer Programs

If interested in a short-term option, there are a variety of program types you can choose from!

Group Study Programs are field schools, where you study UCalgary courses abroad in a hands-on format with a small group of students & instructors. While these programs offer specific academic credit, students from all degrees are welcome to participate.

Summer exchanges are similar to the semester exchanges (where you take courses at another university, pay normal UCalgary tuition, & transfer credit back to your degree). However, these are a shorter duration and often in a cohort format at the partner university. Note: Some summer exchanges are listed below as "fee-paying" - this means tuition is paid to the partner university instead of to UCalgary. Students must apply directly to the partner, but will also submit an application to UCalgary for travel safety/transfer credit purposes.

Finally, we offer research & internship placements. Each one is structured for you to gain professional experience abroad in your field of interest. Note: Some research/internship programs are listed below as "external" - these are programs UCalgary is connected to but doesn't have a formal partnership, so students must apply directly to the program instead of applying through UCalgary.

On a virtual summer exchange, you will take online courses from another university, typically with a mixture of asynchronous and live online classes. This gives more flexibility for students who might be already tied to other in-person commitments like summer jobs.

Because Virtual/Online summer exchanges are coordinated by the host school simultaneously as any In-Person summer exchange offerings, applications will follow the same deadlines.

Fall/Winter Semester Programs

Interested in doing a semester abroad? Exchange programs allow you to become a student at one of UCalgary's partner universities. You will study at the partner university for the semester (fall, winter, or full year), take courses there, and pay your regular UCalgary tuition. After the exchange, you can transfer the course credits back to your UCalgary degree.

Many programs around the world have now reopened! Applications will be taken on a first come, first considered basis. Final deadlines: March 15 (for Fall 2026 programs) and August 15 (for Winter 2027 programs). However, applications may close sooner if all seats are filled, so we encourage applying early!
