The University of Aberdeen, Curtin University and the University of Calgary have formed a strategic alliance.
The existing strategic alliance between Aberdeen and Curtin has expanded to accommodate the additional strengths of UCalgary. These three universities are leading champions of the energy transition, and share mutual strengths and goals for a sustainable future.
Through education and research, we seek to work together in partnership to have a positive impact locally, nationally and globally.
Spanning three continents, the new alliance will:
- Support local, national and global stakeholders in the delivery of a just energy transition and a sustainable future for the world.
- Make a positive impact across the communities we serve.
- Develop engaged, globally competent citizens by providing them with opportunities to study and research.

Delegation attends a White Hat Ceremony
Since 1950, Calgarians have been proudly presenting the white cowboy hats to visitors, dignitaries and guests. An iconic symbol of Calgary’s international reputation for unrivalled hospitality and our passion to be the Ultimate Hosts, Calgary’s identification with the white hat began when local Calgary hat maker, Smithbilt Hats, introduced the first white cowboy hat in 1946.
Information Session on Strategic Alliance and University of Aberdeen
UCalgary was honoured to welcome Prof. George Boyne, Principal and Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Pete Edwards, Vice-Principal, Regional Engagement; and Liza Boffen-Yordanov, Director of Advancement from the University of Aberdeen this September to discuss the Alliance and opportunities for collaboration.
An information session was delivered to the senior leadership team, researchers, exchange students, and other members of the UCalgary community on the University of Aberdeen and the Strategic Alliance, as well as funding opportunities and mechanism to enhance collaboration between the institutions. Jonathan Turner, the British Consulate-General in Calgary, was in attendance and spoke of the importance of the partnership and highlighted funding mechanisms available through UKRI to support mobility and research.
Strategic Alliance Launch Event 2022
The strategic alliance announcement was made at a signing ceremony and panel discussion at the Barcelona 2022 European Association for International Education Conference on Sept. 15 and attended by representatives of the three universities.
