With Explore Micro-Placements, you can explore various fields and areas of work, develop your skills, connect with future employers and complete resume-building projects.
Micro-placements have two main streams, job shadow, and project-based opportunities that offer flexibility with a short-term commitment. They can help you:
- Find work experience that fits with your existing school schedule
- Increase your variety of work experience
- Try new pathways for your career before applying
- Be part of real projects with potential employers

How does a micro-placement work?

Undergraduate, graduate and international students from UCalgary are welcome to apply to Explore Micro-Placements.
Micro-placements are managed through the Elevate platform. Head to elevate.ucalgary.ca to get started!
Choose a micro-placement type
Want to explore a career path? Complete a 4-8 hour job shadow micro-placement to connect with a professional and learn about their role/industry.
Project-based micro-placements allow you to complete a 30-40 hour project. It's a great way to add more work-related experience to your resume and participate in a project from concept to completion.
Complete your placement
Arrange your schedule with the employer, and review the outline of the placement. Work with your employer to finish your job shadow or project-based placement.
Try another or move forward
If you'd like to continue exploring or want to complete more projects, you can complete an unlimited number of micro-placements. Just head back to the Explore Micro-Placements module and apply again.
If you're ready to take another step in your career development, you can look into a co-op/internship with your faculty, or search for jobs on the Elevate job board.

Absolutely! International students are eligible to apply for Explore Micro-Placements. In fact, this is a fantastic way to meet employers and demonstrate your skills prior to beginning the search for co-op, internships or full-time positions.
Yes! This program is open to graduate students which offers employers more options.
Whenever works for you. Micro-placements offer ultimate flexibility, with the ability to work onsite or remotely with an employer. You will arrange a schedule and timeline that works for both sides.
Employers have the option of offering paid or unpaid micro-placements.
As you complete your application, you can rank the opportunities that you are most interested in. We will try our best to match you based on your preference.
Yes! You can complete multiple placements so that you can really experience different fields and opportunities.
We're always recruiting employers for this program! Some areas include: Arts and Culture (entertainment, design, event planning), Business (consulting, marketing, operations), STEM (programming, data science, UI/UX), Healthcare (medicine, rehab), Public Service (education, non-profit, government)
