Civil engineers ask questions such as: How can suspension bridges hold so much weight? Are there better ways to predict avalanches? How do skyscrapers withstand earthquakes?
Civil engineers build a bold future by improving lives and communities and finding solutions to the world’s biggest environmental challenges. Learn in class, during tutorials and through a hands-on design project. Civil Engineering is a broad discipline, ranging from designing bridges and transit systems to biomedical and environmental solutions. It involves the design, construction, operation and maintenance of structures and systems vital to the public. The skills you gain will be applicable to a wide range of work environments.
This fully accredited program features a common first year, which consists of 10 courses in mathematics, sciences, computing, engineering principles, communications and design. Prepare for a career enhancing communities and protecting the environment. Graduates become municipal engineers, structural design engineers and project managers.
Examples include Computing for Engineers, Engineering Design and Communication and General Chemistry for Engineers.
Take your learning off campus by exploring one of our 200+ international opportunities. For example, in Civil Engineering you can go on exchange to Hong Kong PolyU or the University of Stutgart. We encourage you to check out UCalgary’s selection of programs.
In fourth year, we design our own concrete mix. We mix it together and test it to find out the strength of it. Being able to apply knowledge is really beneficial.
