Cheryle Chagnon Greyeyes closes Land Acknowledgement with special prayer.

In June and July 2022, YYC/LRT was honoured to work with Indigenous Knowledge Keeper Cheryl Chagnon Greyeyes, and artists Tamar Cardinal and Seth Dodging Horse to explore The Land. Bryan Faubert and Nicole Tritter led participants in image making, using print transfer techniques, that explored their connection to The Land, guided by the teachings of Chagnon Greyeyes, Cardinal and Dodging Horse. Works were exhibited at Contemporary Calgary in January, 2023.

2022

March – June                 Identity: Self-Portraits

  • 6-week program for Unison at Kerby members exploring portraiture through diverse media and technique offered through ART491 by University of Calgary students.
  • 3 month exhibition at Contemporary Calgary of works created.

 

March - April                 Particle + Wave Festival

  • Shadow Bombing Tour with Bryan Faubert
  • After party for opening of Particle + Wave Festival
  • Projections from YYC/LRT on surrounding buildings w/gobo projectors-rotating sites by Bryan Faubert

  • 8 instructional sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays

  • Downtown West resident and artist Tayebe Joodaki exhibited her horse portraits and provided oil painting demo.

July – July, 2023           Saturday and Sunday Art Classes with Tayabe Joodaki

  • Downtown West resident Tayabe Joodaki offers painting and drawing classes from YYC/LRT. She also uses YYC/LRT as a studio on Fridays, doing her own work. She reports that when she is working, people often stop by and chat, asking about the studio and the project.

 

October – November    Free Art Fridays

  • Free workshops with demonstrations by Bryan Faubert;
  • Participants create small artworks to “release” into the community for others to “adopt”.
  •         

2023

    January/February                 Telling Our Stories

    • Engaging members with Human Capital and Chitra Ganesh exhibitions through in-gallery activities and artmaking.
    • Participants create artists books that told the stories of their families’ stories.
    • Program created and to be implemented by MFA student Gail Hincliffe.
    • Exhibition at Contemporary Calgary May 3 – 15, 2023

     

    January - ongoing               Femme Assembly Meetings

    • The Femme Assembly (artists who identify as female, engaged in work related to feminist issues) holds their meetings at YYC/LRT.

     

    February – May           First Thursdays

    • YYC/LRT participated in the Free First Thursday events at Contemporary Calgary. A booth a Contemporary Calgary introduced visitors to YYC/LRT and the Community Quilt project. Invitations were offered to visit YYC/LRT that evening and create a square for the community quilt.
    • Workshop at YYC/LRT led by Bryan Faubert.

     

    March                           Racialized Immigrant Artist Program

    • Pilot study for PhD student Nürgul Balaç’s doctoral thesis study.
    • Participation of racialized immigrant women who are re-emerging as professional artists in Canada.
    • Artists will make work about their experiences trying to re-establish their professional practices in Calgary.
    • Work to be exhibited at Contemporary Calgary TBD
    • Meetings between artists and curators, grant officers and other “gatekeepers” of the arts industry to discuss barriers and brainstorm supports and more inclusive policies and procedures.

     

    March/April                      Book It! with Sigla Books

    • Program to be developed through collaboration between David , Sidjak, owner of Sigla Books and ART 344 students.
    • Participants to be recruited from Downtown West.

     

    April/May                           Street to Studio

    • Co-funded through the Tegan “Lefty” Copeman Memorial Fund.
    • Series of workshops providing street and tatoo artists with the skills to establish careers as contemporary, professional artists.
    • Studio workshops led by Bryan Faubert and Bramble Lee Pryde.
    • Professional practice workshops by Ryan Doherty, Senior Curator, Contemporary Calgary, AFA and Canada Council grant officers, CARFAC representatives, etc.
    • Exhibition of works at Contemporary Calgary June 26 - July 29, 2023.
