Biography
“Why be a star when you can make a constellation?” - Mariam Kaba
Growing up, I dreamed of working in healthcare and helping vulnerable people with their health. Studying nursing is allowing me to fulfil this dream. Additionally, as a second-generation Canadian, I have developed a passion for the equitable treatment of individuals regardless of our differences. I hope to improve Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in healthcare for both staff and patients.
I am fortunate to be working within my passion by conducting research at the Faculty of Nursing on the experiences of Alberta Nurses towards EDI. I am also the VP of Events for the Decreasing Disparities in Diagnosis (DDD) club here at U of C. In the club, we work to educate students on the various disparities that are present within the healthcare system.
Outside of school, I enjoy volunteering, especially with youth. I am a Youth Engagement Volunteer at the YMCA, where I foster community engagement through sports. I also facilitate various programs with Kids Cancer Care. One of my favourite programs is Camp Kindle, an overnight camp for children with cancer or who have a family member with cancer.
In my spare time, I love spending time with family and friends, going to the gym, and adding to my book collection!
