About:
Formerly known as AIDS Calgary (1983-2013) and HIV Community Link (2013-2022), SafeLink Alberta is a non-profit organization working to reduce the risks associated with sexual activity and substance use by offering low-barrier, non-judgmental, and informed programs and services. Since 1983, we’ve been serving and advocating for priority populations in Calgary and southern Alberta. We believe that everyone deserves access to healthcare services and support.
Services:
SafeLink Alberta offers services through use evidence-based public health approaches to prevent HIV, hepatitis C, and other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections. We do this by working with individuals and their communities to minimize any negative health or social outcomes associated with sexual activity or substance use to improve their overall quality of life.
The following support services are provided for our priority populations at our Calgary office:
Drop-in services:
- Basic food and hygiene supplies
- Safer sex supplies
- Safer substance use supplies
- Naloxone kits
- Information and referrals
- Advocacy to address barriers to service
Peer Support:
- Peer support (individual and group programs) for people living with HIV
- Peer support (group based) for sex workers, including a group for trans sex workers
Systems Navigation:
- Comprehensive and individualized support services
- Engage participants in the development of a service plan
- Provide emotional support, crisis intervention, and education
- Coordinate a network of services on behalf of participants by bridging communication gaps between participants and service providers, attending and/or arranging case conferences, and accompanying participants to appointments as appropriate
- Referrals and facilitation of access to treatment and recovery programs
Outreach services:
- Our team can be found throughout the downtown core several days a week providing safer substance use supplies and support to our street-based participants
Education: SafeLink Alberta’s training sessions draw on our 35 years of experience and are based on evidence and the voices of people with lived experience.
- Our 101 Education Series offers an accessible overview of our community service work and the populations we serve. The target population for this training is service providers, but the public are welcome to attend
