Community Outreach & Science Communication

EBG group members participate in and organize many community outreach and science communication events. These events range from displays at the local science museum Telus Spark, to classroom visits and lab tours, to presenting at public lecture series like Soapbox Science and Pint of Science.

Soapbox Science

Soapbox Science is a public outreach platform that promotes women working in science and the research that they do. The events turns public spaces into an area for learning and debate, in the spirit of Hyde Park's Speaker's Corner. Soapbox Science encourages scientists to explain their research to members of the public using non-traditional methods.

2018's Soapbox Science was held at the Calgary Zoo. Dr. Christine Sharp from EBG presented on the viability of algae biofuels.

In 2019, Soapbox Science was hosted at the University of Calgary campus and the Calgary Zoo. Dr. Maria A. Bautista, Dr. Jayne E. Rattray, and Margaret Cramm participated as members of EBG.

Science Takeover 2019

The Science Takeover event invites everyone be a “scientist for a day,” with free hands-on activities and live demonstrations right from Faculty of Science researchers’ labs. Participants had the opportunity to experience the magic of chemistry, the physics of flight and levitation, the curiosities of parasites, the wonders of virtual reality, the power of earthquakes, and more. Members of the University of Calgary's Faculty of Science collaborated with Beakerhead to host various demonstrations and activities at the Calgary Central Library.

International Science Center and Science Museum Day

The International Science Center and Science Museum Day (ISCSMD) is a yearly, global event illustrating the impact and reach of all the world’s science centers and science museums. It demonstrates the role these institutions play with their millions of visitors in raising awareness of—and engagement in—sustainable development and the solutions to worldwide challenges such as climate change, human health (HIV/AIDS, Zika, clean water, etc.), energy, waste, water shortages, gender, oceans, and other global issues.
