Wednesday, March 16 Date Time Location Wednesday, March 16th 12:00-1:00pm International Student Services (MSC 275) Intercultural Development Inventory

The Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) assesses intercultural competence—the capability to shift cultural perspective and appropriately adapt behavior to cultural differences and commonalities.

During the session, the facilitator will go over the intercultural development inventory in general and participants will learn about the intercultural development continuum, learn about perceived orientation, development orientation, trailing orientations, cultural disengagement, and individualized development plans.

Attendees registered for this session will have an option to sign up to complete a 50-item questionnaire along with a few context short-answer questions 1-2 weeks after this session. After individuals complete the IDI, each person’s responses to the 50 items are analyzed and reports prepared that include the person’s written responses to the contexting questions.  Those reports and individualized development plan will be provided to each participant in advance of a one-on-one debrief session with the facilitator.

The first hour will be dedicated to listening to the lived experiences of folks with these intersectional identities. Following a short break we will reflect on their stories and start a facilitated discussion around these issues.

Date Time Location Wednesday, March 16th 7:30pm TFDL Gallery Hall Awakening from the Illusion of our Separation: A Buddhist Perspective on the Ecological Crisis The Numata Chair in Buddhist Studies at the University of Calgary presents The Leslie S. Kawamura Memorial Lecture with Dr. David Loy, visiting scholar University of Calgary

Can Buddhist teachings help us understand and respond to our ecological situation? We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separation, says the Vietnamese Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. There are precise parallels between what traditional Buddhism teaches about our usual individual predicament, and our collective ecological predicament today. This suggest that the eco-crisis is not only a technological and economic problem but also a "spiritual" challenge. If so, can the Buddhist understanding of our personal predicament also help us respond to the collective one?
