Next Steps to Study Abroad

Interested in study, research, or internships abroad?
We’ll give you all the info and support you need to make it happen.

Step 1 Start Here...

First things first, watch the Study Abroad 101 playlist for all the information you need to get started! It covers the benefits of study abroad, explains the terminology used to talk about study abroad programs, discusses some common myths, and walks you through the process. You can also visit our office on the 5th floor of MacKimmie Tower (MT501) to speak with an advisor.

and WATCH this.

This 20-minute video series will provide all the information you need to learn the basics of Study Abroad and start planning how to internationalize your degree!

Search for available programs and their pages with the Study Abroad Program Finder.

Though the program pages contain a lot of the general information on deadlines and how to apply, we strongly recommend taking the following steps as well. If you're undecided on which program is best for you, meet with one of our study abroad advisors.

  1. For Exchanges/Research/Internships

Book a follow-up appointment with an exchange advisor to get expert information and advice after you have watched our Study Abroad 101 playlist and have an idea where you might be interested in studying, researching, or working.

Note: All appointments are held at UCalgary International Study Abroad, MacKimmie Tower - fifth floor (MT501) Contact us at or 403-220-5581 for further information.

  2. For Group Study Programs

Attend a Group Study Program (GSP) specific information session – see your selected Group Study program page for details on time/date/location. You can also book an appointment with a GSP advisor for more specific advising - contact information can be found on the program pages. Most programs open for application in September/October and close by January/February, or earlier if filled.

Talk to your academic advisor(s) about where you’re at in your degree, when a good time to go abroad would be, and how your preferred program will fit into your studies.

Go ahead and apply when the program(s) you are interested in open for application! Just make sure you’ve read the program pages for deadlines and application requirements.

Once you've submitted an application, please visit the Accepted Students page for the next steps in the process!
