Assessment

Understanding "Assessment" in the Online Mode of Teaching

The sudden strike of Covid-19 virus and its quick transformation into a pandemic worldwide have immediately forced the traditional way of teaching and learning that is characterized by the classroom setting into an online teaching mode of virtual reality, which is understandably an unfamiliar territory for many. This signals a number of new, unforeseeable challenges to both teachers and students, among which, “assessment” is perhaps the most pressing one, as it is so closely associated with such common concerns as academic integrity, effectiveness of traditional methods of evaluation, appropriate use of e-technology, etc. This roundtable will try to look at the core question of “assessment” in the online mode of teaching from multiple perspectives, hoping to develop an informed and more substantial understanding of the ultimate purpose of assessment, its’ unique value and role in teaching, as well as how to design or adjust methods of evaluation that may be able to meet the new challenges.

Creating and Adapting Activities for Online Chinese Class on Diverse Platforms

A good design of class activities is critical for online course success since student interaction creates a learner-centered environment. This is a discussion on the development of effective instructional activities for online Chinese class. In discussion, we hope to find ways to establish a content-rich and student-focused online classroom dynamic.

Perspectives on Study-abroad Chinese Programs: The Canadian Case

This roundtable discussion will engage in a dynamic dialogue among the panelists from four Canadian universities, who will share their experiences, multiple perspectives and critical thinking on an important educational initiative that has become highly popular across Canada since the 1980s, namely, the Study-Abroad Chinese Program (SACP). Why do we run such a program? What are the key issues involved in the design and implementation of a successful program of this kind? How can the students maximize their learning in these programs? Our conversations will center around, but not limited to, these issues and questions.

Scaffolding Proficiency Development Through Interactive and Engaging Task-based Approaches: A Demo Session

朱俐萍博士在维多利亚大学获得语言教学硕士和博士,在卡加利教育局两所高中执教三十年,主要从事英语和汉语第二语言教学,曾分别担任英语和汉语教研室主任,并参与了阿省中文教学大纲和教材的设计。目前一半工作职责为指导顾问,为学生提供课程和升学指导。
