We recognize that this has been a stressful time with unknown and unprecedented challenges due to COVID-19. University of Calgary continues to be committed to supporting students during this time; we will continue to communicate with students and schools to understand impacts and determine the best way forward. We want to ensure students are not disadvantaged and are supported as they start their post-secondary journey. To support you in this time, please read our frequently asked questions.


Frequently Asked Questions

I would like to apply to UCalgary for a future term and would like to know how the grades received in the winter 2020 term will impact my application evaluation?

1. High School applicants: All winter 2020 grades, as reported by the reporting authority in the country, province or territory will be used, with or without a final examination.

2. Transfer applicants: We will use the grade and course information provided by your post-secondary institution as follows:

  • Admission average: All graded courses, up to 30 units, will be used in the Admission GPA calculation. Courses taken in winter 2020 and awarded credit on an alternative grading system (e.g., Credit Received, Completed Requirements, pass, complete) will not be used as part of the 30 units to calculate the admission average.
  • Required courses: Courses taken in winter 2020 that are graded or were awarded credit on an alternative grading system (e.g., Credit Received, Completed Requirements, pass, complete) will be used to meet required courses for admission. These courses will not be used in the admission average calculation.

I’ve received an offer of admission. With all the changes to exams and course delivery, how do I maintain my offer of admission?

We have made the decision to finalize admission offers based on your current admission average.  Complete your current courses; however, your final grades will not impact your admission decision.

A number of our first-year courses require a high school course as a pre-requisite. To ensure you are successful in first year, we encourage you to complete your required courses and provide us with a transcript as soon as it’s available, but no later than December 23, 2020. We will use the grades reported by your school, with or without a final exam. You will still be able to take fall term courses during this time.

The conditions of admission in your student centre reflect this information.

What if I can’t complete the required courses I need?

Many courses are offered through school boards and UCalgary’s Continuing Education division (online, in-person, distance). These can be completed during the summer or fall, as long as the grade is available by December 23, 2020.

If you are unable to complete your required courses by December 23, 2020, we will work with you and your faculty to determine a pathway that will enable you to continue your studies at UCalgary.

Will having required courses outstanding when I start my Fall 2020 program impact my ability to register in first year courses?

No. Pre-requisites for courses taken in the fall 2020 term will be waived to ensure that you are able to register for required courses for your program.

I am at a high school/homeschool student that requires SAT’s to finalize my admission.

SAT requirements will be waived for admitted students; courses completed will be used to finalize admission.

The conditions of admission in your student centre will reflect this information by April 3, your offer of admission letter will not change.

Will I get transfer credit for IB, GCE or AP courses where a final exam is not completed?

Advanced credit will be given for all course received on an official IB/GCE/AP organization transcript as detailed here:  https://www.ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/a-12-1.html

I have been admitted, but I cannot pay the admission deposit by the deposit deadline? Can I be granted an extension?

We know that there have been challenges with admission deposit payments for students living abroad where there are exceptional circumstances and banks were/are closed in some countries. To support students in these situations the University has implemented a credit card payment options through Global Pay for Students (https://student.globalpay.wu.com/geo-buyer/uofcalgary).

To pay your deposit, go to Global Pay for Students, select your country and select include WU Admission deposit to get a quote. To see all payment options including credit cards, debit cards and bank transfer, select ‘show more options’.

With the implementation of these changes to support deposit payments, deposit extensions are no longer available.

 

I have received an offer of admission. With changes to course delivery and grading systems (credit received, pass, complete), what do I need to do to maintain my offer of admission?

Your offer of admission will be finalized as soon as in-progress required courses have been completed. Required courses given a ‘Credit’ grade, will be considered as meeting required courses for both admission and pre-requisite purposes.
