Shagufta Farheen is a fourth-year student, pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting at the Haskayne School of Business. She is currently serving as a student-at-large Senate Representative on the University of Calgary Senate. Shagufta hopes to pursue a career in law upon graduation, and further utilize her voice to represent communities in need.

As a student, Shagufta had the opportunity to be an advocate on matters about education, child protection, and student concerns. Since her high school years, she has been involved with World Vision Canada as a National Youth Ambassador and connected with several international advocates to share their stories on advocacy at the Women Deliver 2019 conference. At the university, she established a World Vision UCalgary chapter to engage students in dialogue on child protection issues – particularly through the No Child for Sale campaign, where she has hosted several engagements to educate consumers on the use of child labour within the supply chains of Canadian businesses. She also appeared on several media outlets, such as Global News, to share the impact of both the national organization and her club. She is also honoured to be one of the Chancellor Club Scholarship recipients for her academic and extracurricular activities achievements.

In the 2020-2021 academic year, she served as a Haskayne Faculty Representatives on the Students’ Union and advocated for students’ concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. In her role as Faculty Representative, she worked with several student leaders to establish the faculty-wide First Year Mentorship Program and Haskayne Wellness Society. Within Haskayne, she also spearheaded the “5 Days of Giving” campaign as a director, for the Commerce Undergraduate Society, to increase awareness on youth homelessness in Calgary. In addition to her advocacy experience, Shagufta regularly competes in local and national case competitions, such as the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition, and has tackled issues on marketing, ethics and human resources.

Outside of her academics and extra-curricular involvements, you can find her playing badminton, travelling, visiting local museums, and learning new languages (she is fluent in 5 languages!). She also worked as a teaching assistant, website and marketing coordinator, research analyst, and sales representative.

Shagufta is excited to represent student interests as a student-at-large Senate representative and is eager to contribute to the campus community.
