About Dr. Samuel Weiss
Dr. Samuel Weiss, PhD’83, is a professor in the Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy at the UCalgary Cumming School of Medicine. In 1992, Dr. Weiss discovered neural stem cells in the brains of adult mammals, for which he received a Gairdner International Award in 2008. Dr. Weiss is the founder and was the inaugural Director of UCalgary’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute.
As Scientific Director of CIHR’s Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA), Dr. Weiss works with the Canadian neurosciences, mental health and substance use health communities to identify research priorities, develop funding opportunities, and translate research evidence into policy and practice to improve the health of Canadians.
